Tupac’s Resurrection Shows the Endless Possibilities Ahead for G.3

The ghostly resurrection of Tupac Shakur last weekend at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was certainly not the first time hologram technology was used to blend the virtual and physical worlds together.

Even though, digitally creating people, characters and scenarios is not an entirely new frontier, I still couldn’t help but think, as virtual technologies become more immersive, how exciting the possibilities are for G.3 when merging the virtual and real worlds.

Some ideas for G.3 scenarios quickly came to mind:

  • Former friends-turned-rivals Tupac and Biggie Smalls reconcile to perform on stage together; which brings us to the idea of bringing back any performer who has passed and can now perform live with any still living performer or group. At the top of my wish list would be Freddie Mercury.
  • Safely and ethically integrate the domain of warfare (with armies, navies and so on from all eras) into G.3 competitions. Virtual technologies could also pit historically accurate and fictional military units against each other.
  • Pitting the all-time teams (of all sports and eras) against each other to help settle questions of who and which teams are the best of all-time.
  • Integrating past all-time teams and players into current G.3 play.
  • Playing out alternate histories that affect the outcome of G.3 competitions.
  • Enable the extension of video games into the physical world.

THE GAME In Pictures: A Basic GAME Formation Featuring Denard Robinson and Pat White

BGF_Denard_Robinson-Pat_Whi

A previous post detailed the first basic GAME formation and suggested the ThB positions for dynamic football quarterbacks, Pat White from West Virginia University and Denard Robinson from the University of Michigan.

In G.3 the ThB can be best described as a mobile multi-nodal hybrid position whose primary role is that of a thrower and whose targets are players spanning multiple nodes. ThB’s can range from tall power throwers to relatively smaller, more explosive mobile throwers like White and Robinson.

The action shot above features an alternate reality in which Rich Rodriguez’s combined Michigan and West Virginia football spread option and GAME option attacks are advancing against a multi-team platoon that includes a squad of Ohio State defenders. Pat White (ThB) has just optioned the ball to Denard Robinson (ThB) after going through his throwing progressions on the wings (transition zones). Note White’s dirty uniform; a detail that reflects White’s transition from another node (played on natural grass) to his current node (played on FieldTurf).

10 Great MMA Freak Matches, Part 2

An interesting read from Jake Rossen of Sherdog, chronicling MMA's 10 Greatest Freak Matches, Part 2. I particularly liked #2. There was plenty of negative reaction to this matchup between Bob Sapp and an anime character, Kid Muscle, but it's unusual matches like this that will always find a home in THE GAME.

The Metaverse: Virtual Worlds and Mirror Worlds

In previous posts, I've stated that virtual worlds and the convergence of the digital and physical worlds are essential pillars in the ever-expanding structure of THE GAME. Whether it is creating/augmenting supercompetitions in existing/evolving virtual worlds or in a real world context, or linking physical objects used and referenced in THE GAME with the digital world, technology is the one thing binding G.3 across all worlds. The technologies that are helping propel and shape THE GAME are simultaneously enabling the construction of an infinitely rich and diverse virtual reality-the Metaverse.
In the July/August 2007 issue of MIT's Technology Review, a fascinating article by Wade Roush entitled "Second Earth" (please note that access to the article requires registration) explains that "free-flowing and ungoverned" virtual worlds like Second Life, There, Entropia Universe, Moove, Habbo Hotel and Kaneva; and mirror worlds ("if they were books, virtual worlds would be fiction and mirror worlds would be nonfiction") such as Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth represent the fundamental technologies that will be required to construct the Metaverse .
Roush proposes that, "what is coming is a larger digital environment combining elements of all these technologies-a "3-D Internet"....People will enter this environment using PC-based software similar to the programs that already grant access to Second Life and Google Earth. These "Metaverse browsers" will be to the 3-D Internet what Mosaic and Netscape were to the dot-com revolution-tools that both provide structure (by defining what's possible" and enable infinite experimentation."
"There will be a bunch of different worlds, owned, controlled, and operated by different organizations," predicts David Rolston, CEO of Forterra Systems. "They will be built on different platforms, and you will have community standards about how you can connect these worlds, and open-source software that carries you between them." The word "Metaverse" will refer to both the overarching collection of these worlds and the main port of entry to them, a sort of Grand Cyber Station that links to all other destinations. The central commons itself could be designed as a mirror world or a virtual world or some interleaving of the two: people logging in to the Metaverse might want it to look like Manhattan or the Emerald City of Oz, depending on the task at hand. But either way, partisans say, the full Metaverse will encompass thousands of individual virtual worlds and mirror worlds, each with its own special purpose. To borrow a trope from corporate networking, it will be an "interverse" connecting many local "intraverses."

Canon aside, I always wanted to see these universes crossover into each other. Due to the amazing talents of its fans, we can now glimpse this collision in the sci-fi multiverse:
